RAFT connects policy with practice, and practice with policy, supporting both the development of better-informed policies and more effective implementation. We inform policy-making processes with experiences from the ground, and help translate market and policy signals and incentives into better practices through training and demonstration of sustainable forest management techniques.
In Indonesia for example, RAFT partners have been active participants along with many others in the development of Indonesia’s new timber legality assurance system. Under the new system, all forest concessions and factories producing forest products for export must be audited and certified as legal. To help ensure that the system hits the ground running, RAFT developed a training program endorsed by Indonesia’s national Forestry Training and Education Center to help forest staff across the country meet this new requirement.
RAFT partners are able to make these connections between high level policy-making and realities on the ground by working together, bridging the provision of technical inputs to policy development with research and capacity building in support of practical application.
