RAFT recognizes the interdependence of the different points along the wood and paper products supply chain and the need to align incentives and support to drive behavior of actors at all of these points – from forest, to factory to furniture showroom and back. Active across six countries in the region – from communities in Lao PDR to factories in China – RAFT is bringing transparency to the global timber supply chain hand-in-hand with responsible management to the forests of Asia and the Pacific.
We have learned that building capacity to manage forests responsibly in Indonesia, Lao PDR or PNG is necessary but not sufficient. If we want responsible management practices in the forest to last, forest companies need an equally responsible manufacturer in China or Vietnam to sell their products to. These manufacturers are in turn driven by the demands of their buyers in places like Australia, Europe and the United States.
Together, RAFT partners cover all of these points on the supply chain, working with forest managers, wood manufacturers and retail buyers in multiple countries to strengthen both the demand for responsible wood and paper products and the capacity of companies and individuals to respond.
